Life and Adventures
Hermann IV was a loyal supporter of Emperor Frederick I, also known as Frederick Barbarossa. He joined the Emperor in many important events.
Helping the Emperor
Hermann took part in the attack and destruction of the city of Milan. This happened around 1162. From 1176 to 1178, he joined Emperor Frederick's military trips to Italy. He was also part of the famous Battle of Legnano in 1176. In this battle, the Emperor's forces fought against cities in Italy.
Peace in Italy
Later, Hermann played a key role in making peace. He was a trusted person who helped guarantee the Peace of Constance in 1183. This agreement was very important. It gave many cities in the Lombardy region of Italy their independence. This meant they could rule themselves more freely.
The Third Crusade
Hermann IV also joined the Third Crusade. This was a major religious war led by European rulers to take back the Holy Land. He traveled with Emperor Frederick through a region called Anatolia. Their goal was to reach the Siege of Acre, a big battle for a city.
Challenges on the Journey
In June 1190, Emperor Frederick died during the crusade. This sad event caused many German soldiers to leave. Thousands went home through ports in Cilicia and Syria. The remaining German and Hungarian soldiers continued their journey. However, they faced another challenge. A disease spread through their camp near Antioch, making the army even weaker.
Hermann's Death
Hermann IV died in the camp on September 13, 1190. Because of all these difficulties, only a small part of the original army reached the siege of Acre.
