Hermann III of Baden (born around 1105 – died January 16, 1160) was an important ruler. He was known as the Great. He held the titles of Margrave of Verona and Margrave of Baden. A margrave was a type of count who ruled a border area.
Hermann III was the son of Hermann II of Baden and Judith von Hohenberg. He became the ruler of the Margraviate of Baden in 1130. He ruled this area until his death in 1160.
Hermann III's Role in History
Hermann III was a loyal supporter of the Staufen family. The Staufens were a powerful royal family in the Holy Roman Empire. Because of his loyalty, Hermann III had disagreements with his own relatives. These relatives were from the Zähringen-Swabia family.
In 1140, Hermann III took part in a major event. He helped in the attack on Weibtreu castle. After this, he was given control of Selz in Alsace. This area was like a special district.
In 1151, Hermann III received another important title. He was given the Margraviate of Verona. This area was taken from Ottokar III of Styria. In 1153, a special document showed that Emperor Frederick I bought Castle Besigheim from Hermann III.
Hermann III also joined Emperor Frederick I in his first military trip to Italy. During this trip, he officially earned the title of Margrave of Verona. Hermann III also took part in the Second Crusade. This was a big religious war.
Family Life and Marriages
Hermann III was married twice during his life. His first marriage was in 1134. He married Bertha von Lothringen. She passed away sometime after 1162. Bertha was the daughter of Simon I, Duke of Lorraine. Her mother was Adelaide of Leuven.
Hermann III and Bertha had two children:
- Hermann IV (died September 13, 1190)
- Gertrud (died before 1225). Gertrud married Graf Albrecht von Dagsburg in 1180.
After 1141, Hermann III married for a second time. His second wife was Maria of Bohemia. She was the daughter of Duke Sobeslav I of Bohemia.
Hermann III was buried in the Augustine Monastery. This monastery is located in Backnang.
