Hermán Gaviria Carvajal (born November 27, 1969 – died October 24, 2002) was a talented Colombian football player. He was known for playing as a central midfielder, helping his team control the middle of the field.
Football Career Highlights
Hermán Gaviria played for several football clubs during his career. In Colombia, he played for teams like Atlético Nacional, Deportes Tolima, Deportivo Cali, and Atlético Bucaramanga. He also played for Shonan Bellmare in Japan's J2 League.
Gaviria was a part of the Colombian national team. He played in the football tournament at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. He even scored two goals during the Olympics!
He also played in three Copa América tournaments, which is a big football competition for South American countries. His team finished in third place twice, in 1993 and 1995.
Gaviria played a total of 27 games for the national team, scoring 3 goals. He was chosen to play in the 1994 FIFA World Cup held in the United States. In one important game, Colombia needed to win against Switzerland to have a chance to stay in the tournament. Gaviria scored a goal in that game, helping his team win 2–0.
His Passing
Sadly, Hermán Gaviria passed away on October 24, 2002. He was practicing with his club, Deportivo Cali, when he and his teammate Giovanni Córdoba were struck by lightning. Hermán Gaviria died instantly. He was only 32 years old.
People often called him "Carepa" because that was the name of his hometown in Antioquia Department. Hermán Gaviria left behind his wife and two children.
