Hernia facts for kids
A hernia happens when a part of your body, like an organ or some tissue, pushes through a weak spot in the muscle or wall that usually holds it in place. Think of it like a balloon pushing through a small hole in a fence.
There are different kinds of hernias. Most often, they show up in your abdomen, which is your belly area.

What is a Hernia?
A hernia is a medical condition where something inside your body moves out of its usual spot. It pushes through a weak area. This can cause a bulge or a lump that you might be able to see or feel. Sometimes, it can also cause pain.
What Causes Hernias?
Hernias can happen for several reasons:
- Born with it: Sometimes, people are born with a weak spot in their body wall. This is called a hereditary cause, meaning it can run in families.
- Heavy lifting: Lifting very heavy things, especially if you don't use the correct lifting technique, can put a lot of strain on your muscles and cause a hernia.
- Other reasons: Things like constant coughing, straining during bowel movements, or even being pregnant can also put pressure on your body and lead to a hernia.
Common Types of Hernias
While hernias can happen in different places, some are more common:
- Inguinal Hernia: This is the most common type. It happens when part of the intestine pushes through a weak spot in the lower belly wall, often near the groin.
- Hiatal Hernia: This type occurs when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the muscle that separates your chest from your belly.
- Umbilical Hernia: This happens around the belly button. It's common in babies, but adults can get them too.
How Are Hernias Treated?
If a hernia is small or doesn't cause many problems, doctors might just watch it. Sometimes, medicine can help with the symptoms, like pain. However, medicine usually doesn't make the hernia go away completely.
For many hernias, especially if they cause pain or get bigger, surgery is often needed. During surgery, doctors gently push the organ back into place and then fix the weak spot in the muscle wall. This helps to prevent the hernia from coming back.
