Heron Island is a small island in the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec, Canada. It is about 129 acres (0.49 square kilometers) in size. The island is part of the city of Sainte-Catherine. The northern part of the island is located in the Lachine rapids, which are fast-moving sections of the river.

Heron Island is one of 37 special "protected sites" that are part of a program called "Saint-Laurent, Vision 2000". This program helps to protect important natural areas along the Saint Lawrence River. In 2002, a company called Hydro Quebec gave the land to The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC). The NCC now manages Heron Island as a wildlife reserve. This means it is a safe place for animals and plants to live.

A Home for Migratory Birds

Since 1937, Heron Island has been a special place for birds. It was made a federal migratory bird sanctuary. This means it is a protected area where birds can safely rest, feed, and nest during their long journeys. The official name for this sanctuary is Ile aux Hérons Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

The island is named after the herons that live there. It is home to Quebec's second-largest group of Great Blue Herons. These large, wading birds are known for their long legs and blue-gray feathers. Other birds that nest on the island include the Black-crowned Night Heron and the Great Egret. Many other bird species also use the island as a safe haven.

White-tailed Deer on the Island

Around the year 2000, a few White-tailed deer arrived on Heron Island. They likely swam across the river or walked over the ice in winter. Because there were no natural predators, like wolves or bears, the deer population grew quickly.

By 2012, a survey from the air estimated that there were about 46 deer on the island. This many deer started to cause problems for the island's plants. They were eating too much of the vegetation, which was stressing the natural environment. To help the island's ecosystem, a plan was approved in 2014 to carefully manage the deer population. This helped to keep the island healthy for all its wildlife.
