Hersi's Early Life and Music Journey
Hersi Matmuja was born in Kukës, Albania, on February 1, 1990. She started singing when she was just 8 years old. As a child, she took part in many music festivals and talent shows. At the same time, she studied singing at a special music school in Tirana called Liceu "Jordan Misja." She was a brilliant student and finished with the highest possible grade.
When Hersi was only 13 years old in 2003, she had a cool opportunity. She provided the singing voice for the character Melody in the Albanian version of the Disney movie The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea.
Music Competitions and Training
Hersi first joined the famous Festivali i Këngës when she was 16. She won first prize in the Youth Category for her song "Ah jetë, oh jetë." She later returned to this festival three more times. Hersi also competed twice in another music show called Kënga Magjike.
In 2009, Hersi decided to study music even more seriously. She auditioned for the "Santa Cecilia" Conservatory in Rome, Italy. She was so good that she qualified first among all the people who tried out! There, she studied singing and began her professional music career, performing in concerts and classical music competitions. In October 2014, she graduated from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory with the highest possible score, earning the title of "Maestro."
Even though she had classical music training, Hersi enjoys many different types of music. She has said that artists like Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, Rihanna, Björk, and ABBA have influenced her music.
Representing Albania at Eurovision
Hersi Matmuja was one of 16 singers who took part in the 52nd Festivali i Këngës. Her song, "Zemërimi i një nate" (which means "One night's anger"), was written by Jorgo Papingji and composed by Genti Lako. When she performed it, she quickly became a favorite to win.
She opened the final night of the competition and received 69 points from the judges. This win meant she would represent Albania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. She beat the second-place contestant, Klodian Kaçani, by 24 points. The special Eurovision version of her song, "One Night's Anger," and its music video were released on March 20, 2014.
Hersi performed in the first semi-final of Eurovision on May 6, 2014. She placed fifteenth out of sixteen acts in her semi-final, which meant she did not move on to the grand final on May 10.
