She became famous after winning the 52nd Festivali i Këngës, a big music competition in Albania. This win allowed her to represent Albania in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014.

Hersi's Early Life and Music Journey

Hersi Matmuja was born in Kukës, Albania, on February 1, 1990. She started singing when she was just 8 years old. As a child, she took part in many music festivals and talent shows.

During this time, she also studied singing, called Canto, at a special school in Tirana. It was called Liceu "Jordan Misja". She was a top student and finished with the highest possible grade. When she was only 13 years old, in 2003, Hersi even sang the voice of Melody in the Albanian version of the Disney movie The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea.

Music Competitions and Training

While Hersi was still studying, she first joined the Festivali i Këngës competition. She was 16 years old at the time. She won first prize in the Youth Category for her song "Ah jetë, oh jetë". She later returned to compete in Festivali i Këngës three more times. Hersi also participated twice in another music show called Kënga Magjike.

In 2009, Hersi tried out for a famous music school in Rome, Italy. It was called the "Santa Cecilia" Conservatory. She was the top applicant and got accepted! There, she studied singing professionally. She also started performing in concerts and classical music competitions. In October 2014, she graduated from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory. She earned the highest score and the special title of "Maestro".

Even though she trained in classical music, Hersi enjoys many different styles. She says her favorite singers include Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, Rihanna, Björk, and ABBA.

Representing Albania at Eurovision

Hersi Matmuja was one of the 16 singers in the 52nd Festivali i Këngës. Her song was called "Zemërimi i një nate," which means "One Night's Anger." Jorgo Papingji wrote the words, and Genti Lako composed the music.

When she performed on the first night, many people thought she would win. She opened the final night of the competition. The judges gave her 69 points, which was the highest score. This meant she would represent Albania in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. She won by a big margin, leaving the second-place song behind by 24 points.

The special Eurovision version of "One Night's Anger" and its music video came out on March 20. Hersi performed in the first semi-final of Eurovision on May 6. However, she placed fifteenth out of sixteen acts in her semi-final. This meant she did not make it to the final round on May 10.
