2013 ← Eurovision Song Contest → 2015

The 59th Eurovision Song Contest was a big music competition held in Copenhagen, Denmark. Denmark got to host the event because Emmelie de Forest won the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 for them the year before. This exciting contest took place over several days in May 2014. The first semi-final was on May 6, 2014, the second on May 8, 2014, and the Grand Final was held on May 10, 2014.

About the Contest

The Eurovision Song Contest is a huge international music event. Different countries from Europe (and a few others) send a singer or group to perform an original song. They all compete to win the title of Eurovision champion! It's a fun way for countries to share their music and culture.

How Countries Qualify

Not every country gets to go straight to the Grand Final. Most countries have to compete in one of two semi-finals first. Only the best songs from each semi-final move on to the final show.

The "Big Five" and Host Country

There are a few special countries that automatically get a spot in the Grand Final. These are France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. They are called the "Big Five" because they contribute the most money to the contest. The country hosting the contest also gets a direct spot in the final. In 2014, that was Denmark.

Semi-final 1

The first semi-final took place on May 6, 2014. Many countries performed their songs, hoping to get enough votes to reach the Grand Final. Countries like Spain, France, and Denmark were able to vote in this semi-final. Out of all the performers, the top 10 countries moved on to the final round.

Semi-final 2

The second semi-final was held on May 8, 2014. Just like the first, countries performed their songs and aimed for a spot in the Grand Final. Countries such as Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom voted in this semi-final. Again, the top 10 countries from this group qualified for the final.

The Grand Final

The Grand Final took place on May 10, 2014. This was the big night where all the qualified countries from the semi-finals joined the "Big Five" and the host country, Denmark. Everyone performed their songs one last time, hoping to win the most votes from viewers and juries across Europe.
