About the Contest
The Eurovision Song Contest is a huge international music event. Different countries from Europe (and a few others) send a singer or group to perform an original song. They all compete to win the title of Eurovision champion! It's a fun way for countries to share their music and culture.
How Countries Qualify
Not every country gets to go straight to the Grand Final. Most countries have to compete in one of two semi-finals first. Only the best songs from each semi-final move on to the final show.
The "Big Five" and Host Country
There are a few special countries that automatically get a spot in the Grand Final. These are France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. They are called the "Big Five" because they contribute the most money to the contest. The country hosting the contest also gets a direct spot in the final. In 2014, that was Denmark.
Semi-final 1
The first semi-final took place on May 6, 2014. Many countries performed their songs, hoping to get enough votes to reach the Grand Final. Countries like Spain, France, and Denmark were able to vote in this semi-final. Out of all the performers, the top 10 countries moved on to the final round.
- Here are some of the countries that competed in Semi-final 1:
- Armenia with "Not Alone" by Aram MP3
- Sweden with "Undo" by Sanna Nielsen
- Iceland with "No Prejudice" by Pollapönk
- Russia with "Shine" by Tolmachevy Sisters
- Ukraine with "Tick-Tock" by Mariya Yaremchuk

- Netherlands with "Calm After the Storm" by The Common Linnets
- Hungary with "Running" by András Kállay-Saunders
Semi-final 2
The second semi-final was held on May 8, 2014. Just like the first, countries performed their songs and aimed for a spot in the Grand Final. Countries such as Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom voted in this semi-final. Again, the top 10 countries from this group qualified for the final.

- Malta with "Coming Home" by Firelight
