Music Career
How She Got Started
Emmelie started singing when she was only nine years old. For several years, she sang in a gospel choir with her mother.
When she was 14, she teamed up with a Scottish folk musician named Fraser Neill. They performed together at music festivals and other small events. They even made an album, but it was not widely sold. At 18, Emmelie moved to Copenhagen to study singing at a special school called the Complete Vocal Institute.
Winning the Eurovision Song Contest
In 2013, Emmelie competed in the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, which is the show where Denmark chooses its singer for the Eurovision Song Contest. She performed the song "Only Teardrops" and won, earning the chance to represent her country.
Her first album, also called Only Teardrops, came out on May 6, 2013. This was just before the big Eurovision competition in Malmö, Sweden. The album had 12 songs, including different versions of her famous single.
At Eurovision, Emmelie first competed in the semi-final on May 14 and easily made it to the grand final. Many people who bet on the contest thought she would win. On May 18, she won the Eurovision final with 281 points. This was 47 points more than the singer from Azerbaijan, who came in second place.
Later that year, she performed "Only Teardrops" at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Kyiv, Ukraine. She also received an award called the "European of the Year Award" from the Danish European Movement.
After Eurovision
Emmelie's career continued to grow after her big win. In 2014, she released a new single called "Rainmaker".
