Ruth's Early Life
Ruth Lorenzo was born on November 10, 1982, in the Region of Murcia, Spain. From a very young age, she loved music. She was a big fan of the musical Annie and would sing along to the songs, even before she understood the English words.
When she was six, Ruth discovered the amazing voice of Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballé. Her mother bought her an album by Caballé, and Ruth started to sing opera herself. She practiced imitating Caballé's voice until she could sing perfectly in tune.
At age 12, Ruth's family moved to Utah in the United States. This was her first chance to really get involved in music at school. Her teachers encouraged her a lot, and she joined competitions. She even played lead roles in school musicals like The Phantom of the Opera and My Fair Lady.
When Ruth was 16, her family moved back to Spain. She had to stop her singing lessons because her family had money problems. For a while, Ruth gave up on her dream of becoming a professional singer.
At 19, she joined a rock band. This was a new challenge because she had only sung opera before. She also decided to quit her job in her family's business to chase her music dreams again. After three years of touring Spain with the band, they decided to split up. Ruth then got a job at Polaris World, where she performed and worked in public relations.
Ruth's Music Journey
Joining The X Factor
In 2008, Ruth decided to audition for the fifth season of The X Factor in the UK. She sang "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" for the judges Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, and Louis Walsh. They were very impressed, and she moved on to the "bootcamp" stage.
Ruth passed bootcamp and went to St. Tropez to audition for her mentor, Dannii Minogue. After an emotional performance of "True Colors" sung in Spanish, Dannii chose Ruth for her final three acts to go to the live shows.
In the first live show, Ruth sang "Take My Breath Away" in both English and Spanish. Simon Cowell loved it and told her to sing in Spanish more often. However, in Week 2, she ended up in the bottom two. She sang "Purple Rain" in the sing-off and was saved.
Ruth was in the bottom two again in Week 5. She sang "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and was saved by the judges. By the quarter-final, Ruth was Dannii's last act. She was eliminated after getting the fewest public votes. Ruth left the show with another performance of "Always".
