Sir Hervey Bagot, 1st Baronet (born February 8, 1591 – died December 27, 1660) was an important English politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) during a time of great change in England. He also held a special noble title called a Baronet.

Early Life and Education

Hervey Bagot was born in a place called Checkley, in Staffordshire, England. His parents were Walter Bagot and Elizabeth Cave. When he was about 17 years old, in 1608, he began studying at Trinity College, Oxford University. After finishing his studies and before his first marriage, he lived in Checkley. Later, he moved to Field Hall, which was close to his family's very old home, Blithfield.

Political Career and Titles

Sir Hervey Bagot was a key figure in his local area and in national politics. In 1626, he became the High Sheriff of Staffordshire. A High Sheriff was a very important local official. They were in charge of keeping the peace and enforcing laws in their county.

He was also elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Staffordshire. This meant he represented his county in the English Parliament. He served two terms as an MP: first from 1628 to 1629, and again from 1641 to 1642.

In 1627, King Charles I gave him a special honor. He was made the 1st Baronet Bagot of Blithfield Hall. A Baronet is a hereditary title, which means it can be passed down through the family. It is a rank below a Baron but above a Knight.

Family Life

Sir Hervey Bagot was married two times during his life. His first wife was Katherine Adderley. Her father, Humphrey Adderley, was a respected gentleman who worked for several English monarchs, including King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. Sir Hervey and Katherine had six children together. Their eldest son, Edward, later inherited his father's title.

After Katherine passed away, Sir Hervey married his second wife, Ann Fisher. She was the daughter of Sir Clement Fisher.

Sir Hervey Bagot died at Field Hall in 1660. He was buried in Blithfield, the place where his family had lived for many generations. His son, Edward, then became the 2nd Baronet.

Family Legacy in America

The Bagot family name also spread to other parts of the world. A relative of Hervey Bagot, possibly his nephew, was named John Bagot. This John Bagot married a woman named Martha Mathews. They decided to move to the Thirteen Colonies in America.

When John Bagot arrived in America, he changed the family name slightly to Baggett. He settled in Virginia, in either Surrey County or Isle of Wight County. This John Baggett started the American branch of the Bagot/Baggett family.
