Hester Shaw, also known as Hester Natsworthy, is a main character in Philip Reeve's Mortal Engines Quartet book series. She is a brave and determined young woman who plays a key role in the story.
About Hester Shaw
Hester Shaw is about 15 years old when her story begins in the Mortal Engines Quartet. She is the daughter of David Shaw and Pandora Shaw. A cyborg named Shrike raised her after her parents were no longer able to.
Hester has copper-colored hair and gray eyes. She has a noticeable scar that runs across her face, affecting her mouth and nose. She also has only one eye.
Hester's Role in the Story
In the first book, Mortal Engines, Hester tries to get revenge on Thaddeus Valentine. Her attempt does not go as planned. This event leads her to meet Tom Natsworthy. Together, they begin an adventure that changes the future of their world.
Hester in Movies
The book Mortal Engines was made into a film in 2018. In the movie, the adult Hester is played by Icelandic actress Hera Hilmar. A young Hester is played by New Zealand child actress Poppy Macleod.
Some things about Hester were changed for the movie. Her scar is not as severe as described in the books. Also, her age was changed to her twenties in the film. The movie director, Christian Rivers, said that a very realistic scar might have made some viewers uncomfortable. The author, Philip Reeve, understood these changes. In the film, Hester also loses her mother when she is eight years old. She also fights Valentine on his airship.
