Hester Sigerson Piatt (born June 13, 1870 – died June 16, 1939) was an important Irish poet and journalist. She wrote about Ireland's fight for independence.
Early Life and Family
Hester Sigerson Piatt was born in Dublin, Ireland. Her birth name was Anna Hester Sigerson, but her family called her Hetty. Her parents were Hester Varian and George Sigerson.
Her father, George Sigerson, was a doctor, a poet, and even a senator. Both her mother and her sister, Dora Sigerson Shorter, were also writers.
Journalism and Poetry
Hester became a journalist and a poet herself. She wrote for several newspapers and magazines. These included the Weekly Freeman, the Lyceum, and Irish Fireside. She also wrote for American and English publications.
Her poems were so good that they were included in important collections. Famous poets like W. B. Yeats and Padraic Colum featured her work in their anthologies of Irish verse.
Supporting Irish Independence
Hester was a strong supporter of Irish independence. She was a member of Cumann na mBan. This was an Irish women's organization that worked to help Ireland become a free country.
She wrote about important topics related to Irish history. For example, she wrote about the life of Charles Kickham, an Irish nationalist.
Later Life
Around 1900, Hester married Arthur Donn Piatt. He was an American diplomat working in Ireland. They had two children, Eibhlín and Donn.
Sadly, her husband passed away in 1914. Hester continued to live in Ireland, staying in her father's home. She passed away in Dublin in 1939. She is buried with her husband in Glasnevin cemetery.
