Dora Maria Sigerson Shorter (born August 16, 1866 – died January 6, 1918) was an Irish poet and sculptor. After she got married in 1895, she started using the name Dora Sigerson Shorter for her writings.

Dora Sigerson Shorter's Life

Dora was born in Dublin, Ireland. Her father, George Sigerson, was a doctor and a writer. Her mother, Hester Varian, was also a writer. Dora was the oldest of four children.

Their family home was a popular spot for artists and writers to meet. Here, Dora met many important people who were part of the new wave of Irish literature. She went to the Dublin School of Art. W. B. Yeats, a famous poet, was also a student there.

Dora became a key figure in the Irish Literary Revival. This was a time when Irish writers and artists created many new works. She published many collections of her poems starting in 1893. Her sister, Hester Sigerson Piatt, was also a writer. Dora was friends with other writers and poets like Katharine Tynan, Rose Kavanagh, and Alice Furlong.

In 1895, Dora married Clement King Shorter. He was an English journalist and a person who wrote reviews about books. They lived together in London. Dora passed away there when she was 51 years old. The exact reason for her death is not fully known. Her friend, Katharine Tynan, wrote that people believed Dora was very sad and heartbroken after the important events and executions in Ireland in 1916. This sadness might have affected her health.
