Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The book known as Het Notite Boeck der Christelyckes kercke op de Manner of Philips Burgh is a very special and rare old record book. It belonged to the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow in Sleepy Hollow, New York.

This book is super important for understanding early American history. It tells us a lot about daily life in a Dutch village during a time when the English ruled the area, called the Province of New York.

A man named Abraham de Revier Sr. kept his own notes, but his book is now lost. In 1715, another person named Dirck Storm used Abraham's notes to write the history of the church in this important record book.

What's Inside the Book?

The book is split into five main parts, like different sections of a diary or a school yearbook:

  • First Division: This part has a short history of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, written by Dirck Storm.
  • Second Division: This section lists all the church members from 1697 to 1775.
  • Third Division: Here you can find the names of the church leaders, called Elders and Deacons, from 1697 to 1776, and again in 1790.
  • Fourth Division: This part records all the baptisms (when babies or new members join the church) from 1697 to about 1778, and then again in 1791.
  • Fifth Division: This section lists all the marriages that took place from 1697 to 1790.
