Hetty Goldman (born December 19, 1881 – died May 4, 1972) was an amazing American archaeologist. Archaeologists are like history detectives! They dig up old things to learn about the past. Hetty was a true pioneer. She was the first woman to teach at the Institute for Advanced Study. She was also one of the first women to lead big digs in places like Greece and the Middle East.

Early Life and Education

Hetty Goldman was born in New York City on December 19, 1881. Her family was well-known. Her dad, Julius Goldman, was a lawyer. Her mom, Sarah Adler Goldman, managed their home.

Hetty went to Bryn Mawr College and graduated in 1903. She studied English and Greek there. Later, she studied archaeology at Radcliffe College. She was the first woman to get a special scholarship from Harvard. This scholarship let her study at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in Greece. She earned her PhD degree in 1916. Her special paper was about ancient clay figures found in a place called Halae.

A Pioneer in Archaeology

Hetty Goldman made history in 1936. She became the first woman to be hired at the Institute for Advanced Study. This is a very important research center. She worked there until she retired in 1947.

Her hard work and discoveries were recognized. In 1950, she became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This is a group that honors smart people. In 1966, she received a special award. The Archaeological Institute of America gave her their Gold Medal. This award is for amazing achievements in archaeology.

Hetty Goldman passed away on May 4, 1972. She died in Princeton, New Jersey. Her work helped us learn a lot about ancient civilizations.
