Hew Dalrymple was a Scottish lawyer and poet who lived a long time ago, from 1727 to 1774. He was also a very important lawyer in a place called Grenada.

Who Was Hew Dalrymple?

Hew Dalrymple was born on July 12, 1727, in Scotland. He was the oldest son of Robert Dalrymple, who was also a lawyer. Hew married Grissel Brown, and they had four children together – two sons and two daughters. They later separated.

His Work as a Lawyer

Hew Dalrymple studied law and earned a special degree called an LLD in 1771. This is a very high degree in law. He became a well-known lawyer, or "advocate," in Scotland.

From 1771, he served as the Attorney General of Grenada. This meant he was the chief legal advisor for the government in Grenada, which was a British colony at the time. He was also involved in a very famous legal case known as the Douglas case.

What He Wrote

Hew Dalrymple was also a talented writer. He wrote several pieces, including:

  • A sad poem, called an elegy, for Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough. The Duke was a military leader who led a raid in 1758.
  • A written piece defending Scotland during a time when a prime minister named Bute was in charge. This was known as the Bute administration.
