The Right Honble. John Earl of Bute (NYPL Hades-292302-465981)
Prime Minister Bute

John Stuart, the 3rd Earl of Bute, was an important political figure in Great Britain. He served as the Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1762 to 1763. He was the first Prime Minister from the Tory party in many years, though many of his government members were from the rival Whig party.

Bute resigned from his position after facing strong criticism. This criticism came after he signed the Treaty of Paris. Many people felt the terms of this treaty were too easy on France and Spain. This was despite Britain's big wins in the Seven Years' War. King George III liked Bute and wanted him to stay in government, but Bute chose to step down.

Who Was John Stuart, Earl of Bute?

John Stuart was born in Scotland in 1713. He became the 3rd Earl of Bute when he was just ten years old. He grew up to be a close friend and teacher to Prince George, who later became King George III. This friendship helped him rise in British politics.

Britain's War and Peace

During Bute's time, Britain was fighting the Seven Years' War. This was a huge global conflict involving many powerful countries. Britain had achieved many victories in this war. When it was time to make peace, Bute helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris.

The Treaty of Paris

The Treaty of Paris officially ended the Seven Years' War in 1763. It was signed by Great Britain, France, and Spain. While Britain gained a lot of land and power, some people thought Bute gave away too much. They felt France and Spain got off too easily, especially after Britain's strong performance in the war.

Why Did Bute Resign?

The public and other politicians strongly criticized Bute for the peace treaty. People felt he had not gotten the best deal for Britain. This pressure became too much, and Bute decided to resign in April 1763. Even though King George III supported him, Bute felt he could no longer lead the government effectively.
