Life and Education
Hi Kyung Kim was born in South Korea. She loved music from a young age. She studied at Seoul National University in Korea. There, she earned her first degree.
Later, she moved to the United States. She continued her studies at the University of California, Berkeley. She earned both her master's and doctoral degrees there. She learned from famous composers like Andrew Imbrie and Olly Wilson.
From 1988 to 1990, Hi Kyung Kim lived in Paris, France. She worked at a special music research center called IRCAM. This was part of a scholarship she received.
After finishing her studies, Kim became a professor. She taught at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She also traveled back to Korea in 1985 and 1998. This was to learn more about traditional Korean music. She also researched the music of another composer, Elliott Carter, in Switzerland.
