Hiam Abbass (born November 30, 1960) is a talented actress and film director. She has both Israeli and French citizenship. You might know her from her roles in popular movies like Blade Runner 2049 and the TV show Succession. She has also appeared in many other films and TV series, showing her wide range as an actress.
Early Life and Background
Hiam Abbass was born in Nazareth, Israel, on November 30, 1960. She grew up in a nearby village called Deir Hanna. Since the late 1980s, she has lived in Paris, France, and also holds French citizenship.
While filming the movie Munich in 2005, Hiam Abbass lived in a hotel with actors from both Israel and Palestine. They had many important conversations that helped them understand each other better. She shared that it was difficult for the Arab actors to act out scenes where they had to pretend to handle the Israeli actors roughly.
Acting and Directing Career
Hiam Abbass is well-known for her strong performances in many films. Some of her notable roles include The Syrian Bride (2004), Paradise Now (2005), and Lemon Tree (2008). In Lemon Tree, she played the main character, Salma Zidane, and won an award for Best Performance by an Actress at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
She also appeared in the science fiction movie Blade Runner 2049 (2017) as Freysa, a leader of a freedom movement. On television, she gained a lot of attention for her role as Marcia Roy in the HBO drama series Succession, which ran from 2018 to 2023. She has also been in the Hulu comedy series Ramy since 2019.
