Hibernia, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hibernia was once a small village located near what is now Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Today, a large apartment complex stands on the land where Hibernia used to be. This complex is still called "Hibernia." You can find it at the corner of East Main Street and Noe-Bixby Road, inside the I-270 loop, on the east side of Columbus.

History of Hibernia Village

Around 1840, a few years after the famous National Road was built through Ohio, a man named Thomas Armstrong sold some land along the road. Four or five families built their homes there. This small group of homes eventually grew enough to get its own post office on August 25, 1849. That's when people started calling the area "Hibernia."

Even though the post office closed in January 1857, the village continued to exist for a while. Hibernia was listed as a stop on the National Road until about 1900. As late as the 1940s, Columbus bus lines on Route 40 East would still stop in Hibernia before reaching Reynoldsburg.

Carlisle Garden Cemetery

Inside the modern-day Hibernia apartment complex, there is a cemetery known as Carlisle Garden. It is believed that the people buried here were residents of the old Hibernia village. The oldest gravestone dates back to 1810, and the most recent one is from 1877.

Many veterans from two important American wars are buried in Carlisle Garden. These include soldiers who fought in the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The staff of the apartment complex still takes care of the cemetery plots today.
