Exploring Hidden Island
Hidden Island is part of the Buccaneer Archipelago. This is a group of many islands. Hidden Island is the biggest island in the western part of this group.
Where is Hidden Island?
The island is about 45 kilometers (28 miles) east of a place called Bardi. It covers a large area, about 1,901 hectares (4,700 acres). Imagine a big park, that's how much space it takes up!
Island Shape and Size
Hidden Island has a very unusual shape. It's not a perfect circle or square. It stretches about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from north to south. At its widest point, it measures about 5 kilometers (3.25 miles) across.
High Points of the Island
The highest spot on Hidden Island is at its southern end. This point reaches 135 meters (443 feet) above sea level. There's another hill at the northern end. It's a bit smaller, standing at 97 meters (318 feet) tall.
What Grows There?
The island is covered in low, bushy plants. You can also find small, twisted gum trees. These trees are common in Australia. A special plant called Solanum leopoldense Symon also grows here.
The Whirlpool Passage
Hidden Island is very close to another island called Chambers Island. A narrow waterway separates them. This waterway is known as Whirlpool Passage.
A Tricky Channel
Whirlpool Passage can be quite dangerous. This is especially true when the tides are changing. The water can flow very fast, over 10 knots (11.5 miles per hour). This fast current creates many large whirlpools. Some of these whirlpools can be 1 meter (3 feet) deep! It's also separated from the mainland by a narrow channel.
Traditional Owners
The original people of this land are the Aboriginal Australians. They are the traditional owners of Hidden Island.
The Mayala People
The traditional owners of Hidden Island are the Mayala peoples. This group includes the Yawijibaya and Unggarranggu peoples. They belong to the Worrorran languages group. They have always known Hidden Island by its special name, Banggoon.
