Hidehiko Shimizu (清水 秀彦, Shimizu Hidehiko, born November 4, 1954) is a former Japanese football player and manager. He was born in Tokyo, Japan, on November 4, 1954. He played as a midfielder for Nissan Motors (now Yokohama F. Marinos) and later became a successful football manager for several teams, helping one team get promoted to Japan's top league.

Playing Football: His Early Days

Hidehiko Shimizu started his football journey in Tokyo, Japan. After finishing his studies at Hosei University, he joined a team called Nissan Motors in 1977. He played as a Midfielder, which is a player who helps both with defense and offense on the field. He played for Nissan Motors until he retired as a player in 1988.

Becoming a Coach: Leading Teams

After he stopped playing, Hidehiko Shimizu decided to become a coach. In 1989, he started as an assistant coach for Nissan Motors, which later changed its name to Yokohama Marinos.

First Manager Role: Yokohama Marinos

In 1991, he became the main manager for Yokohama Marinos. He led the team for several years, until 1994.

Managing Other Clubs

  • In 1996, Shimizu became the manager for Avispa Fukuoka.
  • In 1998, he joined Kyoto Purple Sanga as an assistant coach. He was soon promoted to manager in June of that year. He managed the team until June 1999.
  • In August 1999, he took on a new challenge as manager for J2 League club Vegalta Sendai.

Success with Vegalta Sendai

Shimizu had a big success with Vegalta Sendai. In the 2001 season, he led the team to finish in 2nd place in the J2 League. This great performance meant the club was promoted to the J1 League, which is Japan's top football league! He continued to manage Vegalta Sendai until September 2003.
