About Hideshi Hino
Hideshi Hino was born in Qiqihar, China. His family were Japanese workers who lived there. They moved back to Japan when he was very young, right after World War II.
Hino has shared that his journey to Japan was quite difficult. Some of his manga stories are inspired by his own life. For example, his grandfather was a yakuza (a member of a traditional Japanese organized crime group), and his father used to be a pig farmer. These real-life details have appeared in his manga, like in Panorama of Hell.
Hino first thought about working in movies. But then, he was inspired by other manga artists, Shigeru Sugiura and Yoshiharu Tsuge. He decided to tell his stories through manga instead. He started by making his own fan comics, called doujinshi. His first professional story, Tsumetai Ase, was published in a manga magazine called COM in 1967.
Later, he started publishing in another magazine called Garo. By 1971, with his series "Hideshi Hino's Shocking Theater," he became known for his unique and sometimes strange world of scary characters and creepy scenes.
He became very popular, especially among readers of shojo manga (manga aimed at young female readers). Works like Dead Little Girl and Ghost School were featured in shojo magazines.
In 2004, a company called Pony Canyon made a series of six live action films. These movies were based on Hino's manga and were called Hideshi Hino's Theater of Horror.
