High Sheriff of Cleveland facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The High Sheriff of Cleveland was a special job in Cleveland, England. This role existed from 1974 until 1996. A High Sheriff is a very old and important position in England, representing the King or Queen in a county. They help with things like keeping the peace and supporting the justice system.

Cleveland was a county formed in 1974. It was created from parts of North Riding of Yorkshire and County Durham. This happened because of a law called the Local Government Act 1972. When Cleveland became a new county, it got its own High Sheriff. This new role took over from the High Sheriffs of Yorkshire and County Durham for that area.

In 1996, the county of Cleveland was changed again. It was no longer a separate county. Because of this, the job of High Sheriff of Cleveland also ended. The areas that used to be Cleveland are now part of the areas covered by the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire and the High Sheriff of County Durham.
