The Park United Presbyterian Church is a historic building in Highland Park, Michigan. You can find it at 14 Cortland Street, right where it meets Woodward Avenue. This church was first built in 1910 and was known as the Highland Park Presbyterian Church.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. A year later, in 1983, it became a Michigan State Historic Site. Today, it is part of The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and still holds church services.

History of the Church

The Highland Park Presbyterian Church began in 1893. It started as a "mission church" from the First Presbyterian Church of Detroit. This means it was a new church supported by an older, larger one.

Just three years later, a small chapel was built on the same spot where the church stands today. The church community grew quickly, reaching over 200 members. Because of this growth, the larger building you see now was constructed between 1910 and 1911.

In 1972, the Highland Park Presbyterian Church joined with another nearby church, the Palmer Park Presbyterian Church. They formed a new church called the Park United Presbyterian Church. The combined groups decided to meet in the Highland Park building.

Church Architecture and Design

The Park United Presbyterian Church is a large building, about 110 feet long and 85 feet wide. It was built in a style called Tudor Gothic. This style often looks like old English castles or large houses.

The church is made from red brick, with light-colored limestone used for decoration. Its roof is covered with red terra cotta tiles. The main part of the church has a very big stained-glass window.

On the south side of the church, there is a tall, square tower. This tower has strong supports called "buttresses" and a flat roof. Inside the tower, there's a belfry with openings (louvers) where bells would be. The main entrance to the church is covered by a wooden porch with a sloped roof.

Behind the main church building, there is another section called the educational wing. This part also has a sloped roof. A house for the minister, called a parsonage, was built in 1905 and is located behind the church on Cortland Street.
