The Park United Presbyterian Church is a special building in Highland Park, Michigan. It is located at 14 Cortland Street, right where it meets Woodward Avenue. This church was first built in 1910 and was known as the Highland Park Presbyterian Church. It is recognized as an important historical place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The state of Michigan also named it a State Historic Site in 1983. Today, it is part of The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and still holds church services.
A Look Back: Church History
The Highland Park Presbyterian Church started in 1893. It began as a "mission church" from the First Presbyterian Church of Detroit. This means it was a new church supported by an older, larger one.
Just three years later, a small chapel was built on the same spot where the church stands today. The church community grew quite a lot. Soon, there were over 200 members. Because of this growth, the bigger building you see now was constructed. This happened between 1910 and 1911.
In 1972, something new happened. The Highland Park Presbyterian Church joined with another nearby church. This was the Palmer Park Presbyterian Church. Together, they formed the Park United Presbyterian Church. The combined church community then met in the Highland Park building.
What the Church Looks Like
The church building is quite large. It is about 110 feet long and 85 feet wide. It was built in a style called Tudor Gothic. This style often looks like old English castles or grand homes.
The church is made from red bricks. It has light-colored limestone around the edges and windows. The roof is covered with red terra cotta tiles. The main part of the church has a very big stained-glass window. This window lets colorful light shine inside.
On the south side of the church, there is a square tower. This tower has strong supports called buttresses. It has a flat roof and a belfry with louvers. A belfry is where church bells are kept. Louvers are angled slats that let sound out but keep rain away.
The main entrance to the church is covered by a wooden porch with a sloped roof. Behind the main church building, there is another section. This is the educational wing, also with a sloped roof. A house for the minister, called a parsonage, was built in 1905. It sits behind the church on Cortland Street.
