Her Books for Young Readers
Since 2001, Hilde has written almost 50 books for children and young people. Many of these books have been translated into other languages. You can find her books in Danish, German, Spanish, Korean, French, and Chinese. She has won several important awards for her children's books. These include a Zilveren Griffel, a Boekenwelp, and a White Raven. The White Raven award comes from the International Youth Library.
Her Thriller Novels
Hilde Vandermeeren also writes thrilling mystery books for adults.
- Her thriller Als alles duister wordt (which means When Darkness Descends) was released in April 2013. It won the Knack Magazine Hercule Poirot Readers Prize that same year.
- Her other psychological thrillers include De toeschouwers (The Watchers) from 2014.
- Stille grond (Silent Ground) was published in 2015. This book was chosen as a finalist for the Golden Nose award in 2016. This award is given for the best crime novel written in Dutch each year. The rights to make Silent Ground into a movie were sold to Eyeworks Film & TV Drama in Belgium.
- Scorpio was published in 2016.
- In 2017, her book Schemerzone was released. It won the Hercule Poirot Prize for the best Flemish crime novel of that year.
Short Stories and Collaborations
Hilde Vandermeeren has also written short stories.
- Her short story The Lighthouse was published in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine in March/April 2016. It was also a finalist for the Derringer Award in 2017 for Best Short Story.
- Her second short story, Stranger in the Night, was published in the same magazine in December 2016.
She worked with a criminal lawyer named Walter Damen on a series of three books.
- The first book, Restless, was published in 2018.
- This was followed by Bottomless in 2019.
- The last book in the series, Relentless, came out in 2020.
These books are part of a big international project called DETECt. This project involves universities, TV channels, and creative professionals from Europe.
International Recognition
The English rights for her book Scorpio (also known as The Scorpion's Head) were sold to Pushkin Press in the UK. The book was translated by Laura Watkinson. It is part of a new series called Walter Presents, which features books chosen by producer Walter Iuzzolino.
In 2021, Hilde Vandermeeren became an Honorary Citizen of Torhout. This special honor was given to her because of her great achievements in writing.
