Hilland, South Dakota facts for kids
Hilland was once a small town in Haakon County, South Dakota. Today, it is considered a ghost town, meaning it no longer has people living there. The U.S. government's Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) still lists it as a place that existed.
The Beginning of Hilland
The town of Hilland was first planned and started in 1908. It was named after Hilland Campbell, whose father was one of the very first people to settle in that area.
A Busy Post Office
In the same year, 1908, a post office was opened in Hilland. A post office is a place where people can send and receive mail. It was a very important part of the town for many years, helping people connect with others and get their letters and packages. The Hilland post office stayed open for a long time, finally closing its doors in 1958. After the post office closed, fewer and fewer people lived in Hilland, until it became a ghost town.
