Hillsborough Trinity Methodist Church is a church located in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. It is about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) north-west of the city centre. You can find it on Middlewood Road, right across from Hillsborough Park.

History of Hillsborough Trinity Methodist Church

Building the Church

Hillsborough Trinity Methodist Church was built in the early 1900s. A man named John W. Firth led the project. The church was needed because more and more people were moving into the countryside around Sheffield.

The land for the church was bought in December 1898. It cost £547 and was purchased from J. Willis Dixon. His home, Hillsborough Hall, is now the Hillsborough library.

While the main church was being built, a temporary "Iron Church" was set up nearby on Leader Road. People used this simple building for worship until the new church was ready.

Opening and Changes

Hillsborough Trinity Church was designed in the Gothic style, which is a classic church building look. It cost £5,500 to build and opened its doors on September 1, 1902.

The church was first part of the Methodist New Connexion. This was one of many groups that came from the original Wesleyan Methodist church. In 1932, it joined the main Methodist Church of Great Britain.

At the start of the 20th century, Methodism was very popular. There were eight Methodist churches in the Hillsborough area. Today, Hillsborough Trinity is the only one left. The others have either been taken down or are now used for different things.

The outside of the church has stayed mostly the same over the years. However, a new church hall was added in 1963. Inside, the church has been updated for modern worship. For example, the original balcony is no longer used because of safety rules.

Present Day and Future Plans

Community Hub

Hillsborough Trinity Methodist Church has many buildings next to it. These were built in 1901 and 1963. These spaces are very busy and used for lots of activities.

They host Sunday School for children and groups like Brownies and Boys' Brigade. Many other community events also take place here. These include coffee mornings, a community cafe called Polly's Parlour, and groups for toddlers. There are also craft groups, a lunch club, and other community meetings.

Building for the Future

The church has been working on big plans to make the building even better for the community. This work is happening in three stages. The first stage was finished in 2014.

The second stage began in January 2015. This part of the project created a new entrance for the church. It also added a new church office and improved bathrooms and shower facilities.

Before these big plans, other updates were made. The stage in the hall was removed to create more space. The kitchen was made bigger by moving a wall. The kitchen also got all new equipment and counters. Two new rooms were added in the loft space above where the stage used to be. The entire church was also repainted.

Youth Groups at the Church

Hillsborough Trinity Methodist Church is a home for several youth groups.

The 20th Sheffield Company of the Boys' Brigade meets here. They have different sections for various ages, including Anchor, Junior, Company, and Senior Sections. These groups meet on Thursday evenings.

Other youth groups also use the church. Scouts, Cubs, and Beavers meet on Monday evenings. Guides, Brownies, and Rainbows meet on Tuesday evenings. The church also holds special services throughout the year for these uniformed groups.
