Hillsborough Trinity Methodist Church

Hillsborough Trinity Methodist Church is a special building located in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. It stands about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) north-west of the city center. You can find it on Middlewood Road, right across from Hillsborough Park.

A Look Back in Time

This church was built at the start of the 1900s. A man named John W. Firth designed it. He built it because more and more people were moving to the countryside around Sheffield. The land for the church was bought in December 1898. While the main church was being built, a temporary "Iron Church" was used for worship nearby.

Hillsborough Trinity was designed in the Gothic style. It cost about £5,500 to build. The church first opened its doors on 1 September 1902.

It was originally part of the Methodist New Connexion. This was one of many groups that came from the original Wesleyan Methodist church. In 1932, it joined the main Methodist Church of Great Britain.

At the beginning of the 1900s, there were eight Methodist churches in the Hillsborough area. But today, Hillsborough Trinity is the only one left. The other seven have either been taken down or are now used for other purposes.

The outside of the church hasn't changed much over the years. However, a new church hall was added in 1963. Inside, some parts have been updated for modern worship. For example, the original balcony is not used anymore because of safety concerns.

What Happens Now and Next

The church has many extra buildings, built in 1901 and 1963. These buildings are still used for Sunday School and groups like Brownies and Boys' Brigade. Many other community events also happen here. These include coffee mornings, a community cafe called Polly's Parlour, toddler groups, and a craft group. There is also a lunch club and other community meetings.

The church is currently undergoing big building work. The goal is to make the church a major community building for the future. These plans have three parts. The first part was finished in 2014. The second part started in January 2015. This part will create a new entrance to the church. It will also add a church office and better toilet and shower facilities.

Before this, other updates were made. The hall's stage was removed to make the space bigger. The kitchen was made larger by moving a wall. The kitchen also got new equipment and work surfaces. Two new rooms were added in the space above where the stage used to be. Also, the whole church was repainted.

Youth Groups

The 20th Sheffield Company of the Boys' Brigade is based at the church. They run groups for different ages on Thursday evenings. These include the Anchor, Junior, Company, and Senior Sections.

Scouts, Cubs, and Beavers meet on Monday evenings. Guides, Brownies, and Rainbows meet on Tuesday evenings. The church also holds regular services for these uniformed groups throughout the year.
