Hillside is a beautiful old house located at 310 Litchfield Road in Norfolk, Connecticut. It was built in 1908 for a very wealthy woman named Helen Hartley Jenkins. She was an heiress, meaning she inherited a lot of money from the Remington Arms company.

This house is special because it was designed by Alfredo S.G. Taylor. He was a famous architect from New York City. He designed many summer homes in the Norfolk area. Hillside is considered one of his most amazing designs. In 1982, Hillside was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical building.

What Does Hillside Look Like?

Hillside is south of the main village of Norfolk. It sits on a large piece of land, about 45 acres, which is mostly covered in trees. The house is built on a high spot, giving it amazing views to the northwest. You reach it by driving up a winding road.

Architecture and Design

The house is built in a style called Tudor Revival. This style often looks like old English homes. The bottom part of Hillside, including the basement and first floor, is made of rough stone. The upper part uses a mix of wood beams and stucco. This is called half-timbering.

The house has a main section in the middle. On each side are larger sections called wings. The roofs of these wings have a special shape. They have a gable section on top and a Craftsman-style jerkin-headed gable end.

Inside Hillside

Inside the house, there is a very large main hall. Its ceiling is made of timber and is 40 feet high! There is also a big fireplace you can walk into. Next to it is a cozy sitting area called an inglenook.

Who Lived at Hillside?

Hillside was built in 1908 for Helen Hartley Jenkins. She was the daughter of a very rich family. Her family owned the Remington Arms business. This company made firearms.

The Architect, Alfredo S.G. Taylor

The house was designed by Alfredo S.G. Taylor. He was a well-known architect from New York City. He was a partner in an architecture firm called Levi and Taylor.

Alfredo S.G. Taylor spent his summers in Norfolk. He loved the area so much that he designed over thirty buildings there. Many of these were large summer homes, just like Hillside.
