The Himalayan hazelnut, also known as Corylus ferox or the Tibetan hazelnut, is a special kind of hazel tree. It grows naturally in the Himalayas, a large mountain range in eastern Asia.

What Does This Tree Look Like?

The Himalayan hazelnut is a deciduous tree. This means it loses its leaves every year, usually in the fall or winter. It can grow very tall, up to 32 meters (about 105 feet) high!

Leaves and Flowers

The leaves of this tree are rounded or oval-shaped. They are usually about 7 to 12 centimeters (2.7 to 4.7 inches) long and 3 to 5 centimeters (1.2 to 2 inches) wide. The edges of the leaves are finely serrated, which means they have small, sharp teeth. The tip of the leaf often looks like it's cut off.

This hazelnut tree has both male and female flowers on the same plant. This is called being monoecious. The flowers appear before the leaves do in the spring.

How Does It Reproduce?

The flowers are pollinated by the wind. This means the wind carries pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers. The male flowers grow in long, hanging clusters called catkins. These catkins have many simple flowers without petals. The female flowers are much smaller and harder to see. They look like tiny buds, usually 6 to 8 scaly ones.
