Hira is a small community located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Nelson, New Zealand. It is nestled in the beautiful valley of the Wakapuaka River.
About the Hira Community
Hira is part of a larger area called Nelson Rural. This area covers about 366 square kilometers (141 square miles). It includes other places like Todds Valley, Glenduan, Wakapuaka, and Pepin Island.
Population and People
The Nelson Rural area, which includes Hira, had a population of 1,896 people in the 2018 New Zealand census. This shows that the number of people living here has been growing steadily. For example, there were 192 more people in 2018 than in 2013.
In 2018, there were 657 households in the area. There were slightly more males than females. The average age of people in Nelson Rural was 46 years old. About 18% of the population was under 15 years old.
Most people in Hira and the surrounding area are of European background. However, about 8.7% identify as Māori. Some people also have backgrounds from the Pacific Islands or Asia. Many people identify with more than one ethnicity.

Hira has its own school, called Hira School. It is a public primary school for students from Year 1 to Year 6. The school is open to both boys and girls.
Hira School has a roll of 56 students as of February 2024. The school has been around for a long time. In 1997, it celebrated its 125th anniversary!
