Hiroshi Jofuku (城福 浩, Jofuku Hiroshi, born March 21, 1961) is a Japanese football manager and former player. He is currently the manager of the J1 League club Tokyo Verdy.
Hiroshi Jofuku's Football Journey
Hiroshi Jofuku was born in Tokushima, Japan, on March 21, 1961. He grew up loving football and eventually became a professional player. After his playing days, he moved into coaching and has managed several well-known Japanese football clubs.
Playing Days: A Midfielder's Start
Jofuku started his football journey as a player. After finishing his studies at Waseda University, he joined the Fujitsu football team. He played as a Midfielder for Fujitsu from 1983 to 1989. This experience helped him understand the game from a player's perspective.
Coaching Career: Leading Teams to Victory
After retiring as a player, Jofuku decided to become a coach. He started coaching at Fujitsu in 1993. By 1996, he was promoted to be the manager of the team. In 1999, he moved to FC Tokyo, another big club.
Coaching Japan's Young Stars
From 2005, Jofuku took on an important role. He became the manager for the Japan U-17 national team. Under his guidance, the U-17 Japan team won the 2006 AFC U-17 Championship. This big win allowed them to play in the 2007 U-17 World Cup.
Managing FC Tokyo (First Time)
In 2008, Jofuku returned to manage FC Tokyo. He led the club to win the 2009 J.League Cup, which was a great achievement. However, the team had a tough time in the 2010 season. He left the club in September of that year.
Success with Ventforet Kofu
In 2012, Jofuku joined J2 League club Ventforet Kofu. He quickly made a big impact. He led the club to win the 2012 J.League Division 2 championship that very season. This meant the team was promoted to the top league, the J1 League. In 2014, Ventforet Kofu finished 13th in the 2014 J.League Division 1. This was their best finish ever in the club's history at that time. He left the club at the end of that successful season.
Return to FC Tokyo and Sanfrecce Hiroshima
Jofuku went back to manage FC Tokyo in 2016. However, he left the club in July of that year. In 2018, he signed with Sanfrecce Hiroshima. He guided them to a strong second-place finish in the 2018 season.
Leading Tokyo Verdy to Promotion
On June 15, 2022, Hiroshi Jofuku became the manager of Tokyo Verdy. He worked hard with the team. At the end of the 2023 J2 League season, he successfully led Tokyo Verdy to get promoted to the J1 League through the play-offs. This was a fantastic achievement for the club and for Jofuku.
