Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Historic Buildings Preservation Council (HBPC) was an important group in the Australian state of Victoria. It existed from 1974 to 1989. The Victorian state government created the HBPC in 1974. Its main job was to manage the rules of the Historic Buildings Act 1974. This law helped protect old and special buildings.

What Was the Historic Buildings Preservation Council?

The Historic Buildings Preservation Council, or HBPC, was a special group set up by law. Its purpose was to look after Victoria's historic buildings. It made sure that important old buildings were kept safe for the future. The HBPC was active for about 15 years.

Protecting Important Buildings

The Council had a big job: deciding which buildings were important enough to protect. They looked at buildings that people suggested. These buildings could be privately owned or belong to the government. The HBPC checked if a building was special because of its design or its history. If it was, they added it to a list. This list was called the Register of Historic Buildings for private places. For government buildings, it was the Government Buildings Register.

What Did the Council Do?

Besides listing important buildings, the HBPC had other duties. If someone wanted to change a building on one of the registers, they needed a special permission from the Council. This was called a permit. The HBPC also started some of the first studies about heritage in Victoria. These studies helped people learn more about the state's history and important places.

Who Took Over?

After 1989, the Historic Buildings Preservation Council was no longer in charge. A new organization took over its work. This new group is called Heritage Victoria. Heritage Victoria continues the important job of protecting Victoria's historic places today.
