The Hokenson Fishing Dock is a special place located on Sand Island. This island is part of the beautiful Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin. The dock was built in 1931 and has a rich history connected to fishing in the area.
History of the Dock
This historic fishing dock was once a busy spot, run by three brothers: Leo, Roy, and Eskel Hokenson. They were fishermen who used this dock for their work. It was an important part of their lives and the local fishing community.
In 1976, the Hokenson Fishing Dock was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list kept by the United States government. It includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture. Being on this list helps protect the dock and reminds us of its past. Later, in 1989, it was also added to the Wisconsin State Register of Historical Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical site in Wisconsin too.
