The Holborn tramway station was a special stop for trams located deep underground. It was built beneath a famous street in central London called Kingsway. This station was an important part of the Kingsway tramway subway route, which was like an underground tunnel system for trams. When it first opened, the station had a different name: Great Queen Street.

What Was the Holborn Tramway Station?

The Holborn tramway station was a unique underground stop for electric trams. It allowed trams to travel beneath busy London streets. This helped people get around the city quickly and easily. The station was designed to be part of a larger underground tram network.

When Did Trams Start and Stop Running?

Tram services from Angel in Islington to Aldwych began on 24 February 1906. This was the first route to use the new station. Later, on 10 April 1908, more services started. These new routes connected Highbury station to Tower Bridge and also from Highbury station to Kennington Gate. Trams ran through the station for many years.

Why Did the Station Close?

The Holborn tramway station closed its doors just after 12:30 AM on 6 April 1952. This was because trams were slowly being replaced by other forms of transport, like buses. Even though the station is no longer used, much of it still remains. You can find parts of the old station inside the disused tunnel. However, the public cannot visit the station today.
