Holland House, once known as Julian Hodge House, is a tall hotel building. You can find it on Newport Road in the city of Cardiff, Wales. This building was first built as an office block. It stands about 60 meters (198 feet) tall. With 15 floors, it is the tenth tallest building in Cardiff.
Building History
How Holland House Was Built
Holland House was built in 1968. A Welsh businessman named Julian Hodge (who lived from 1904 to 2004) had it constructed. He named it Julian Hodge House after himself. Later, it was also called the Julian S. Hodge Building.
In 2003 and 2004, the building got a big makeover. It was changed from offices into a hotel. Part of this work involved removing a two-story section that was on top of an underground car park.
Who Used the Building?
When it was first built, Holland House was used for offices. One of the companies that had offices there was Lloyds TSB Bank.
In 2004, the building officially opened as the Macdonald Holland House Hotel. The hotel was managed by Macdonald Hotels for a few years. Then, in 2007, it was sold to AccorHotels. They decided to run it under their Mercure brand.
Something cool happened in 2006! The outside of the building was used in a TV show. It pretended to be a hospital in the BBC sci-fi drama series Torchwood. This show was filmed in Cardiff.
