Holland House is a tall hotel located on Newport Road in the city of Cardiff, Wales. It used to be known as Julian Hodge House. This building was first an office block. It stands at about 60 meters (198 feet) tall and has 15 floors. It is one of the ten tallest buildings in Cardiff.

The Story of Holland House

How the Building Started

The building was built in 1968. A Welsh businessman named Julian Hodge (who lived from 1904 to 2004) had it constructed. It was first called Julian Hodge House. Later, its name changed to the Julian S. Hodge Building. It was designed to be an office building. Many businesses had offices there, including Lloyds TSB Bank.

Becoming a Hotel

Between 2003 and 2004, the building was completely updated. This process is called refurbishment. Workers changed the concrete structure to make it suitable for a hotel. They also removed a two-story part that was above a car park.

In 2004, the building opened as the Macdonald Holland House Hotel. Macdonald Hotels managed it for a few years. In 2007, AccorHotels bought the hotel. They operated it under their Mercure brand. It was known as Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel & Spa. However, on March 18, 2025, the hotel left Accor. It is now called Holland House Hotel Cardiff By Sunday.

Featured on TV

In 2006, the outside of the building was used in a TV show. It appeared as a hospital in the BBC science fiction drama Torchwood. This show was filmed in Cardiff.
