Her Musical Journey
Early Life and First Steps
Holly McNarland grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is from the Métis community. In the early 1990s, she moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, to pursue her music career.
Releasing Her First Music
In 1995, Holly released her first collection of songs, called an EP, titled Sour Pie. She put it out herself. The next year, a big record company, MCA Records, re-released it across the country.
Breakthrough Album and Awards
Her first full album, Stuff, came out in 1997. One of the most popular songs from this album was "Numb". It became a top 10 hit in Canada.
Holly's talent was recognized at the 1998 Juno Awards. She won the award for Best New Solo Artist. She was also nominated for Best Alternative Album for Stuff and Best Video for her song "Elmo".
Collaborations and Return to Music
Holly McNarland has worked with other musicians. She sang on the song "Flight Recorder From Viking 7" with Matthew Good. This song was on his album Loser Anthems.
After her album Stuff, Holly took a break from music for about five years. During this time, she got married and had her first child. She returned to music in 2002 with her album Home Is Where My Feet Are. She went on tour to support the album, and another singer, Emm Gryner, opened her shows.
In 2003, Home Is Where My Feet Are received several nominations at the Western Canadian Music Awards. These included Outstanding Pop Recording and Outstanding Songwriter.
Holly also provided backing vocals for The Tea Party's song "Wishing You Would Stay" in 2004. She worked with Matthew Good again on his song "Pony Boy" in 2005. In 2004, she performed at the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards.
Later Albums
Holly continued to release new music. Her album Chin-Up Buttercup came out in 2007. In 2012, she released Run Body Run.
She collaborated with Matt Good one more time in 2015. They worked together on his cover of Kate Bush's song Cloudbusting. This song was on his album Chaotic Neutral.
