Holm, Inverness facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Holm is a small neighborhood in the south of Inverness, a city in Scotland. It's located on the east side of the River Ness.

Holm is known for the historic Holm Mills. This old mill played an important role in building the Caledonian Canal. It wove special cloth to help stop the canal's banks from leaking! For many years, the mill continued to weave traditional Scottish tartan fabric. Today, the original building is a shop and a place where visitors can learn about its history.

You can also find a large electrical substation on Dores Road in Holm. This important facility helps provide electricity to most of Inverness.

Discoveries from the Past: Holm Mains Farm

Cist1 burial
This picture shows a Bronze Age cist burial.

Long, long ago, during the Early Bronze Age, people lived in the area around Holm. Archaeologists have found amazing things at Holm Mains Farm, located southwest of Inverness. They discovered two ancient burial sites called cists. A cist is like a small stone box or chest where people were buried.

One of the cists was larger and held the remains of a man. He was buried in a crouched position. With him, archaeologists found two special arrowheads with barbs (like hooks) and tangs (the part that fits into an arrow shaft). They also found ten other stone tools, called lithics, and pieces of a beautifully decorated beaker pot. A beaker pot is a type of pottery from that time, often used for drinking.

The second cist also contained the remains of an adult man and another beaker pot. These discoveries at Holm Mains are part of many ancient sites found near the Culduthel area. They show us that this part of Scotland was a very important place for people living thousands of years ago!
