Remembering the Holocaust

The Holocaust was a very sad time in history. It happened during World War II. Around six million Jewish people were killed by the Nazi government in Germany. Many other groups of people were also persecuted and killed. This memorial helps us never forget what happened. It reminds us to always stand up against hate.

How the Memorial Was Created

In 1992, a group of people who survived the Holocaust had an important idea. They lived in the Harrisburg area. They wanted a local memorial to remember the victims. This idea came after they heard about the U.S. Holocaust Museum. They really wanted a similar place in their own community.

Designing and Dedicating the Memorial

The memorial was designed by an artist named David Ascalon. It cost about $200,000 to build. The City of Harrisburg chose a spot for it. This spot is in a public park right next to the Susquehanna River. The memorial was officially opened in 1994.

Annual Remembrance

Every year, a special event called Yom Hashoah is held at the memorial. Yom Hashoah is a day to remember the victims of the Holocaust. People gather at the memorial to pay their respects. They also promise to never let such terrible events happen again.
