About David Ascalon
Early Life and Education
David Ascalon was born in Tel Aviv, which was then called the British Mandate of Palestine, on March 8, 1945. His father, Maurice Ascalon, was also a sculptor and designer from Hungary. David learned a lot about art by working with his father when he was young.
When David was a teenager, his family moved to the United States. They wanted to experience new things. He went to high school in Beverly Hills, California, and finished in 1963.
David continued his studies in art and design at California State University at Northridge. He also studied architecture and interior design at California Polytechnic State University and Pratt Institute in New York. He earned his degree from Pratt Institute.
His Artistic Journey
In the 1970s, David worked in interior design and architecture in New York. He also worked for a famous Israeli architect named Aryeh Elhanani in Tel Aviv. David wanted to create art more directly. So, he started making sculptures from metal using a welding torch. He explored new and abstract designs.
David is also interested in protecting the rights of artists and their artworks. His son, Brad Ascalon, is a well-known industrial designer. David's older brother, Adir Ascalon, was a surrealist painter and sculptor. Adir worked with a famous Mexican artist named David Alfaro Siqueiros. David Ascalon is also a licensed private pilot, which means he can fly airplanes!
Today, David Ascalon lives in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, near Philadelphia. He also spends time in the Hamptons on Long Island, New York.
Ascalon Studios
In 1977, David Ascalon moved to the Philadelphia area. There, he teamed up with his father to create Ascalon Studios. This studio focuses on making special artwork for religious buildings and public places. Much of their art is inspired by religious themes. However, they use modern and unique styles.
Over the years, Ascalon Studios has completed hundreds of projects across North America. These projects include large sculptures, beautiful stained glass windows for religious services, and mosaic murals. Many of their artworks can be found in synagogue architecture and other places of worship. They have also created several Holocaust Memorials. These memorials honor the victims of the terrible events of the Holocaust, including many from David's own family.
Awards and Recognitions
David Ascalon has received many important design awards. These include awards from the American Institute of Architects' Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art and Architecture. He is a member of the International Sculpture Center. He also used to be the president of the American Guild of Judaic Art. He has given talks about Judaic art.
