Holy Trinity Church, Hoylake facts for kids
Holy Trinity Church was an old Anglican church in the seaside town of Hoylake, Wirral, England. It was a special place for people to worship. The church was officially opened on November 1, 1833. Later, in 1860, it became the main church for the areas of Hoose, Little Hoose, and Great Hoose. Over the years, two other churches were built from it: the nearby St Hildeburgh's in Hoylake and St John's in Meols. St Hildeburgh's is now the main church for Hoylake.
Some well-known people who used to sing in the church choir include Heather Slade-Lipkin, who became a harpsichordist (someone who plays an old musical instrument like a piano). Also, Pete Price, a local radio presenter and DJ, and David Hale, who became a judge, were once choristers there.
The Church's End
The first Holy Trinity Church was opened in 1834. However, by 1974, it was declared unsafe and had to be closed. It was taken down soon after, in 1976. After the church was demolished, St Hildeburgh's became the main parish church for the area.
Today, all that is left of Holy Trinity Church is its graveyard. This graveyard holds more than 200 gravestones and memorials. Among them are the war graves of 23 service members from the Commonwealth. Eleven of these are from World War I and twelve are from World War II. One of the heroes buried there is John O'Neill, who received the Victoria Cross for his bravery.
Trinity Road, where the church was located, used to be called Church Road. Its name was changed to avoid confusion with another Church Road in nearby West Kirby.
In 1963, Julian Lennon, who is the son of the famous musician John Lennon, was christened (baptized) in this church. His mother, Cynthia, was living on Trinity Road at the time, almost directly across from the church.
