Building History
How the Church Started
The Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox community began in Vancouver on May 9, 1937. Their very first church service, called a Divine Liturgy, happened on July 18, 1937. This service took place at the Ukrainian National Home.
The next year, people started collecting money to build their own church. A talented Ukrainian-American architect named Sergius Timoshenko designed the building. On September 11, 1949, the cross for the main dome of the church was blessed.
Completing the Church
By Easter in 1950, the first Divine Liturgy was held inside the new church, even though it wasn't fully finished yet. Over the next few years, the church was completed. It was also decorated in the traditional style of the Orthodox faith.
Adding a Community Centre
In 1970, the church community started planning and raising money for a new building. This building, called the Ukrainian Orthodox Centre, has two levels. It is attached to the church and officially opened on June 17, 1973. The centre has an auditorium and a dining room. These spaces are used for church events and other private gatherings.
Special Recognition
In December 1977, the Vancouver City Council recognized the church as an important heritage building. A special plaque was placed on the outside of the church to show this. It is considered a "significant" building and is protected by city rules.
In 1975, the church was given the title of a sobor. Later, in 1983, it was officially named a cathedral. This means it is a main church for the region.
Community Life
Who Attends the Church
About 130 people are part of the church community. The members speak both Ukrainian and English. Many new Ukrainian immigrants have also joined the church.
Church Activities
The church leaders and a group called the sisterhood help take care of the church. They also play a big role in helping with the church services.
The church is also well-known in Vancouver for its monthly "Perogy Night in Vancouver." This is a popular event where they serve Ukrainian suppers on Friday nights.
