History of the Cathedral
Starting the Church Community
The Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox community began in Vancouver on May 9, 1937. Their very first church service, called a Divine Liturgy, happened on July 18, 1937. This service took place at the Ukrainian National Home.
Building the Church
The next year, in 1938, people started collecting money to build a church. A Ukrainian-American architect named Sergius Timoshenko designed the building. On September 11, 1949, the cross for the main dome was blessed by Rev. Stephen Symchych.
The first Divine Liturgy was held in the new church during Easter 1950. At this time, the church was not yet fully finished. Over the next few years, the church was completed. It was also decorated in the traditional style of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Adding a Community Centre
In 1970, the church community started planning to build a new centre. This centre would be attached to the church. It would have two levels. They also began raising money for this project.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Centre officially opened on June 17, 1973. It has an auditorium and a dining room. These spaces are used for church events and other private gatherings.
Special Recognitions
In December 1977, the Vancouver City Council gave the church a special title. They called it an architectural heritage building. This means it's an important historical building. A special plaque was placed on the outside of the church. City rules protect this building.
In 1975, the church was named a "sobor" by Archbishop Andrew. A sobor is a main church for a region. This was for the Ukrainian Greek-Orthodox Church of Canada. This church was later renamed the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada (UOCC) in 1990. In 1983, the church was given the title of a cathedral.
Community Involvement
The church leaders and a group called the "sisterhood" help take care of the church. Their main job is to help with church services. The church is also well-known in Vancouver for its monthly "Perogy Night in Vancouver." These are popular Friday night Ukrainian suppers.
The Church Community
The church community has about 130 members. These members include people who speak Ukrainian and people who speak English. Many recent Ukrainian immigrants are also part of the church.
