Homa Hoodfar (Persian: هما هودفر) is a Canadian-Iranian expert who studies how people live in different societies. She used to be a professor of anthropology at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.
Professor Hoodfar is well-known for her studies on the hijab, which is a veil worn by some Muslim women. She has explored its many forms, meanings, and how it has been used throughout history. A big part of her work also looks at the roles of women in public life in Muslim countries. She studies how religious symbols and ideas have been used to either support or limit women's status in society.
Visiting Iran and Her Arrest
In February 2016, Homa Hoodfar traveled to Iran, which is her home country. She went there for personal reasons and also for her academic research.
In March, just one day before she was planning to leave Iran, some government officials searched the place where she was staying. They took her belongings and her passports.
For three months, Iranian authorities called her in regularly for questioning. Then, in early June, she was arrested. After her arrest, her family shared her story with the news media to let the public know what was happening.
Release from Detention
Homa Hoodfar was held for 112 days. Her release was announced on September 26, 2016. She was able to return home after this time.
