Homa Hoodfar (Persian: هما هودفر) is a Canadian-Iranian expert who studies people and cultures. She is a professor who taught about different societies at Concordia University in Montreal.
Professor Hoodfar is well-known for her studies on how people in Western countries see the veil, or hijab. She has looked at the many ways the hijab is used and what it means, both now and in history. Much of her work also focuses on the roles of women in public life in Muslim societies. She pays special attention to how religious ideas have been used to either help or limit women's standing in society.
Time in Iran
In February 2016, Professor Hoodfar traveled to Iran, which is her home country. She went for personal reasons and also for her studies.
In March, just before she was planning to leave, members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards searched the place where she was staying. They took some of her belongings and her passports.
For three months, Iranian officials regularly asked her questions. Then, in early June, authorities arrested her. After this, Professor Hoodfar's family shared her story with the news.
She was held for 112 days. On September 26, 2016, Iran announced that she had been released.
