The Home Government Association was an important group in Ireland that worked to gain more control for the Irish people over their own country. It was started by a man named Isaac Butt in 1870. The main goal of the group was to achieve "home rule" for Ireland.
Home rule meant that Ireland would be able to manage its own affairs and make its own laws, instead of being fully governed by the United Kingdom. This idea was very important to many Irish people at the time.

What Was the Home Government Association?
The Home Government Association was a political group, sometimes called a "pressure group." This means it was a group of people who worked together to try and influence the government. Their main aim was to get the British government to allow Ireland to have its own parliament and make decisions about its own future.
This group was a key part of the larger movement for Irish home rule. It helped to bring together different people who all wanted Ireland to have more independence.
Starting the Movement
The Home Government Association began at a meeting in Bilton's Hotel in Dublin. This first meeting happened on 19 May 1870. Isaac Butt, who was a lawyer and politician, led the effort to create the group.
Many people attended or supported this first meeting. There were sixty-one people from different political and religious backgrounds. This showed that the idea of home rule had wide support across Ireland.
Public Meetings and Campaigns
The first public meeting of the Home Government Association was held a few months later, on 1 September 1870. This was a chance for the group to share its goals with more people.
The association was also active in political campaigns. They supported candidates in elections who believed in home rule. One person who worked hard in these campaigns was P. F. Johnson.
Becoming the Home Rule League
The Home Government Association did not last for a very long time under its original name. In 1873, the group changed its name and became the Home Rule League. This new name continued the fight for home rule and built on the work started by the Home Government Association.
The Home Rule League went on to become an even bigger and more influential political party in Ireland. It played a major role in Irish politics for many years.
