Homer Gilliam Phillips (1878–1931) was an American lawyer from St. Louis, Missouri. He is best known as an important African-American Republican leader in St. Louis. He is also famous because a hospital, the Homer G. Phillips Hospital, was named after him.

Homer G. Phillips was born in Pettis County, Missouri, in 1878. His father was a minister and had been a slave. Sadly, Homer became an orphan when he was a child. His aunt then raised him. He grew up in a town called Sedalia. Later, he decided to study law. He went to Howard University to become a lawyer.

Working for His Community

As a lawyer, Homer G. Phillips worked hard for the people of St. Louis. He became a respected political figure. One of his biggest achievements was helping to get money for a new hospital. He managed to secure $1 million for this project. The hospital was built on the north side of the city. It was specially built for African Americans during a time when many places were segregated. This meant that Black people often did not have access to the same services as others.

The Homer G. Phillips Hospital

The hospital that Homer G. Phillips helped create became very important. It was named the Homer G. Phillips Hospital in his honor. This hospital provided excellent medical care for the African-American community in St. Louis. It also became a famous training center for Black doctors and nurses.
