A Look Back in Time
How It Started
Homerton Baptist Church began a long time ago. It was founded in the year 1817. Just a few years later, in 1820, the church found a good spot in Homerton Row. They built a new church building there. This new place was finished and officially opened in 1822. It was first known as Homerton Row Chapel.
Name Changes and New Buildings
In 1871, the church joined a group called the Metropolitan Association of Strict Baptist Churches. At this time, its name changed to Homerton Row Baptist Chapel.
Later, in 1962, the local government needed the land where the church stood. They used a process called a compulsory purchase order. This meant the church had to move or rebuild. The land was used to make Homerton Row School bigger. This school later became Upton House Comprehensive School. A new school, City Academy, Hackney, was built on the site in 2009.
In the late 1990s, the church changed its name again. It became Homerton Baptist Church. This name showed its connection to the local area. In June 2016, the local government gave permission for the church to update its building.
