The Homerton Baptist Church is a Baptist church located in Homerton, England. It is part of the Association of Grace Baptist Churches (South East). This church has a long and interesting history, stretching back over 200 years.
A Look Back: The Church's Journey
The church first started in 1817. Just a few years later, in 1820, the church found a piece of land on Homerton Row. They built a special building there, which was finished and officially registered in 1822. This new building was known as Homerton Row Chapel.
In 1871, the church joined a group called the Metropolitan Association of Strict Baptist Churches. At this time, its name changed to Homerton Row Baptist Chapel.
Changes to the Land
Many years later, in 1962, the local government needed the land where the church was. They used a process called a compulsory purchase order. This means the government can buy private land for public use, even if the owner doesn't want to sell it.
The area was then redeveloped. The Homerton Row School, which was next door, was made bigger. This school later became Homerton House School, then Upton House Comprehensive School. In 2009, a brand new school, City Academy, Hackney, was built to replace it.
A New Name and New Building
In the late 1990s, the church changed its name again to Homerton Baptist Church. This new name helped show its connection to the local area.
More recently, in June 2016, the local government gave permission for the church to redevelop its building. By 2018, a new building was completed. This modern building has 24 apartments and a special area for the church to hold its services.
