Homewood is a small, quiet community in Franklin County, Kansas, United States. It used to be called Forest Home. In the 1800s, it was an important place because it had a post office and a stop on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, which was a big train line.
History of Homewood
Homewood was built along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. It was located about 1,039 feet (or about 317 meters) above sea level, which is quite high up!
Around the year 1900, about 100 people lived in Homewood. It was a busy little place with several stores and its own school. The community served as a main spot for people in the nearby countryside to get their supplies and ship out their goods.
The post office in Homewood first opened in 1877. Before that, it was known as the Forest Home post office earlier in the same year. The Homewood post office stayed open for many years, helping people send and receive mail, until it finally closed in 1955.
