The Hong Kong Logistic Support Regiment RLC was a special part of the British Army. It was created to help with supplies and support in British Hong Kong. This happened just before Hong Kong was returned to China. The regiment started on April 8, 1994, and ended on May 31, 1997. Because it only operated for 1,181 days, it earned the nickname "The 1000-Day Regiment." It was likely the shortest-lived peacetime regiment in the British Army's history.

The Regiment's Story

Why Was It Formed?

The Hong Kong Logistic Support Regiment was created to bring all the supply and support tasks under one command. This was important because British Hong Kong was about to be handed over from the United Kingdom to China. The regiment's main job was to make sure everything ran smoothly until the handover in 1997.

Who Was in Charge?

The regiment was led by Lieutenant-Colonel Nigel Lloyd. It had about 500 soldiers. They continued the important work of providing supplies for the British Forces Overseas Hong Kong. The regiment was based at Osborn Barracks in Kowloon.

Gurkha Soldiers Join In

To help with the work, 29 Squadron from The Queen's Own Gurkha Transport Regiment joined the new regiment. These Gurkha soldiers are known for their bravery and skill. They became part of the Hong Kong Logistic Support Regiment to assist with its duties.

The End of the Regiment

The regiment was officially ended on May 31, 1997. It had served for 1,181 days. This made it possibly the shortest-serving regiment in the British Army during peacetime. It was also the very last British Army regiment to be based at Osborn Barracks. After they left, parts of the Chinese People's Liberation Army moved in. This happened just before the official handover of Hong Kong on July 1, 1997.
