At first, these cookies had Bible verses inside. They were given to people who needed help. Later, the messages changed to fun sayings. These cookies became popular as a snack before meals in restaurants nearby.
You can even find a can of their cookies from the 1930s at the Smithsonian Museum! The can is labeled "tea cakes." The company stopped making fortune cookies around the year 2000.
