Honoria Acosta-Sison (born December 30, 1888 – died January 19, 1970) was a very important person in the Philippines. She was the first Filipino woman to become a medical doctor. This was a huge step for women in medicine during her time.

Her Life and Education

Honoria Acosta-Sison was born in the Philippines. She traveled to the United States to study medicine. She attended the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. She finished her medical degree there in 1909.

In 1910, she married the director of the Philippine General Hospital in Manila. This is where she began her medical career. She worked as an assistant in obstetrics. Obstetrics is the branch of medicine that focuses on childbirth and caring for women during pregnancy.

Her Career in Medicine

Later, Dr. Acosta-Sison also worked at St. Paul's Hospital in Manila. In 1914, she became a teacher at the University of the Philippines. She taught medical students there.

By 1940, she became a full professor of obstetrics and gynecology. She also became the head of the obstetrics department. Gynecology is the study of women's health.

Dr. Acosta-Sison was also known around the world for her research. She studied certain diseases related to pregnancy. These included trophoblastic diseases and pre-eclampsia. Her work helped doctors better understand and treat these conditions.

  • She received the Presidential Medal in 1955. This is a very high honour in the Philippines.
  • In 1959, she was given a Gold Medal from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. This was her old medical school.
  • Also in 1959, she was named the Most Outstanding Woman Physician. This award came from the Philippine Women's Medical Association.
  • In 1978, the Philippines honoured her by issuing a special postage stamp. The stamp featured her picture and name.
